PTE (Pearson Test of English)

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a computer based English language test that is aimed at assessing the language skills of non-native speakers wanting to study abroad. It is a multi-level test accepted by educational institutions around the world and evaluates the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills of the aspirants.

The test is three hours long and evaluates the person’s ability to effectively understand and use English in the day-to-day sense. It consists of a multi-level grading system that ensures the most accurate results.

Why take PTE?

The Pearson test evaluates a non-native speaker’s ability in reading, writing, speaking and listening in English. It can be used for admissions to universities abroad. The major attraction is that generally each question tests two skills together.

Another factor that makes this test attractive is that the test results will be delivered in approximately two business days. This makes it suitable for people with an urgent requirement.

Eligibility

Pearson PLC Group, the conducting body of the PTE, has not set many requirements for taking the test. The only criteria is the age factor. Students are supposed to be at least 16 years old when taking the test. Also, students below the age of 18 years need to produce proof of parental consent while appearing for the exam.

Types of PTE

The Pearson PLC Group conducts two formats of the PTE for non-native speakers. These are PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI.

PTE Academic:

The PTE Academic exam is conducted round the year for students wishing to take admission in foreign universities. It consists of all the four sections i.e., reading, writing, listening and speaking, structured in an academic context. The results of the test are valid for a period of two years.

PTE Academic UKVI:

There is basically no difference between the PTE Academic and the PTE Academic UKVI in terms of format or content. The difference is that this test can also be used for migration and work related purposes apart from academic procedures. There are also minor differences in the registration process.

Exam Pattern

As any other English language test, PTE also has all the relevant sections. The PTE exam is divided into three parts:

  1. Reading Section
  2. Listening Section
  3. Speaking and Writing Section
Reading:

This section is further divided into 5 segments and a time of 32-41 minutes is allotted for completing it.

Listening:

This part of the paper is divided into 8 segments with variable time allotment for each segment. The total time for completing this section is 45-57 minutes.

Speaking and Writing:

This section consists of 6 smaller sections that test your promptness over speaking and writing. The total time allotted is 77-93 minutes.

A key differentiator for PTE from other tests is that the time schedule is divided among the different parts of each question as follows:

  1. Question:You are provided time to read and understand the question. The time duration varies depending on the length of the question.
  2. Preparation:On average, you are allotted 10 - 15 seconds to prepare before answering the question, whether it is spoken, written or multiple choice selection.
  3. Answer:This is the total time duration you get to answer the question. This duration varies based on the format of the question.
